2017 FIRST Mega Drive
Teams 340 and 1511 completed our 7th annual 2017 Make A Difference Day Mega Drive on Saturday, October 28 during Rah Cha Cha Ruckus, an off-season robotics competition held in downtown Rochester. This year, we collected non-perishable foods, new and gently-used children's books, and small, used electronics all to benefit children in need in the Rochester area.
Nineteen FRC teams participated in donating, and we collected hundreds of food items, a great sampling of electronics, and over 1,500 childrens books.
We had a great time, and we cannot wait to participate in Make A Difference Day 2018!
2016 FIRST Mega Drive
Teams 340 and 1511 team up every year for Make A Difference Day, and this year 38 volunteers from the teams went to the Greece Barnes and Noble to hold a robot-themed story time, a LEGO building competition, and did robot demonstrations for the kids. A portion of the proceeds of some purchases made that day went to the teams so that they could buy pajamas for kids in foster homes.
The teams also held a Make A Difference Day charity drive at the robotics off-season competition Rah Cha Cha Ruckus on October 29th. Teams attending the competition brought in canned food, children's books, school supplies, and children's winter clothing for donation. In total, 90 winter clothing items, 103 school supplies, 612 food items, and 1,508 children's books were collected and donated. 35 different volunteers from teams 340 and 1511 helped collect, sort, box and pack these donations.
For the past five years we have partnered with Team 1511 to run our "FIRST Mega Drive" for National Make A Difference Day. Make A Difference Day is the largest national day of community service not only for our teams but for a lot of other groups. Millions of volunteers around the world unite in a common mission to improve the lives of others. We held a Mega Drive which consisted of a book drive, non perishable food drive, electronics recycling, and a blood drive. We worked with Reach Out and Read for the book drive to help children. The food drive provided our local Food Link to help the hungry people in our community. The electronics recycling helps to protect citizens and the environment by keeping hazardous materials out of the landfill.
